Welcome to my studio!

I’m Min Ray, a contemporary abstract artist based in the lush hinterland of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, Australia.

More than two and a half years ago, I moved from Melbourne to the Sunshine Coast, where the surrounding natural landscape, changing light and quieter pace of life gradually began to influence my artistic practice. My work has since evolved towards more organic forms, softer movement and tactile surfaces, reflecting my growing connection with the natural world.

Although my visual language is changing, my interest in balance, structure and the relationships between forms remains at the heart of everything I create.

From Geometry to Organic Form

My artistic journey began with hard-edged geometric abstraction, exploring colour, shape, rhythm and architectural structure. I developed a distinctive technique of creating precise geometric compositions entirely freehand, without masking tape. This process brings together discipline and intuition, allowing the human touch to remain present within carefully constructed forms.

In 2021, my painting Motherhood, the beginning was selected as a finalist in the Waverley Art Prize.

Over time, my practice has expanded beyond rigid geometry towards a more organic and expressive visual language. Today, I’m increasingly interested in the space between structure and softness, where shapes feel less constructed and more as though they have emerged naturally.

Still Balance — Connection Through Form

Inspired by stacked stones and natural formations, Still Balance explores connection, support and the delicate balance between individuals. Through the placement, colour and relationships of abstract forms, I reflect on the ways we support one another and share space.

Quiet Bloom — The Memory of Flowers

Quiet Bloom translates the impressions of flowers into abstract forms, layered gestures and soft colour transitions. Rather than depicting botanical details, these paintings explore the fleeting beauty of nature through memory, movement and emotion.

Creating Art for Considered Spaces

Across my practice, I’m interested in how colour, form, texture and negative space influence the way we experience a painting.

I want my work to offer more than a visual focal point. I hope each painting brings a sense of presence to the space it occupies - something that can be appreciated at a glance, yet reveals greater depth and detail through closer observation.

Working from my Sunshine Coast hinterland studio, I continue to explore the meeting point between nature and abstraction, allowing my surroundings and evolving experiences to shape what comes next.

Thank you for being here and for supporting my work.

Artists Statement

Based in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, I create contemporary abstract paintings that explore the relationship between structure, organic form, colour and space.

My practice is grounded in a fascination with how simple forms can carry a sense of presence, movement and connection. I work across geometric, architectural and organic abstraction, allowing these different approaches to inform one another rather than treating them as separate disciplines.

My earlier practice developed through hard-edged geometric abstraction, with each composition drawn entirely freehand. Working without masking tape taught me to embrace both precision and the subtle variations of the human hand. This interest in structure continues in my architectural works, where portals, planes and spatial thresholds suggest light, depth and imagined spaces.

Alongside this, my practice has become increasingly tactile and atmospheric. Organic forms, layered surfaces and painterly gestures allow me to explore ideas of memory, growth, balance and connection. In my Still Balance works, stacked forms become quiet metaphors for relationships, support and the shifting tensions between individuals. In my botanical-inspired works, floral forms are reduced to gestures and impressions rather than literal representations.

Across my practice, I am interested in the space between control and intuition - where considered composition meets the unpredictability of paint, texture and gesture. Colour plays an important role in creating atmosphere, while negative space allows the paintings room to breathe.

I want my work to offer a sense of quiet presence. While the paintings are created with contemporary interiors in mind, my intention is not simply decorative; I hope they invite a moment of stillness, reflection and personal connection.

My work has been exhibited in Australia and is held in private collections internationally. I was a finalist in the 2021 Waverley Art Prize for Motherhood, the beginning.
